How to Help Volunteer

Volunteer

Support Our "Home-Away-From-Home" Atmosphere.

Come discover where you fit in our family! We rely on hundreds of volunteers per month to do everything from answering phones and greeting guests, to gardening, and maintenance to keep the house running for our families. In fact, volunteers provide more than 4,000 hours of time and talents each month to the Ronald McDonald House® of San Diego. After a screening process, we'll give you the training you need.

COOK A MEAL FOR OUR FAMILIES ~ Adult, Teens, Children, Group Opportunity
We strive to provide dinner every night of the week for our families. After a day at the hospital, not having to prepare their own meal is one less worry during this difficult time in their lives. Additionally, they have a chance to connect and spend time with other families in similar situations.

DRIVERS ~ Adult Opportunity
There are always errands to run for our House, just like your house – shopping centers, hardware store, florist, grocery store, airport, etc. You might be transporting goods to the House or families to the airport. You must be at least 21, have a driver’s license and proof of insurance. A 3‐year abstract of your driving record will be required.

OFFICE SUPPORT ~ Adult Opportunity
Front Desk - The front desk is a hub of activity and information and the first impression guests have of our House. You will greet and interact with families and visitors, answer telephones, accept deliveries and donations, assist with keeping our front room clean and welcoming, etc. As you become more comfortable, you will also give tours and help check families in and out of the House.

General Office - The administrative stafff always needs help with general office duties ranging from data entry, phone inquiries, preparing fundraising mailings, filing, making banners and signs, creating centerpieces to assembling gift baskets for special events. It's an ever changing list of projects.

ORGANIZE YOUR OWN EVENT ~ Adult, Teens, Children, Group Opportunity
Be creative! We welcome new ideas. Get a group together and have some fun with a dog wash or a car wash, hold a bake sale or suggest "Denim Days" (employees pay a fee to wear jeans to work) at work? If you'd like to target specific items other than cash, click here to see our most current Wish Lists.

EVENT SUPPORT ~ Adults, Group Opportunity
RMHC-SD hosts several fundraising events throughout the year. Volunteer opportunities include being on the planning commitee, recruiting volunteers, set-up and tear-down, soliciting auction items and sponsorships. Whether you have experience in this area or a budding interest, there is a task for everyone.

HOUSE OPERATIONS SUPPORT ~ Adult Opportunity

Guest Services - Some families come here with nothing but the clothes on their backs so we do our best to provide them with the essentials. You can help us organize toiletries, clothing cabinets and toys, assemble welcome bags and assist with checking families in and out of the House.

House Services - If you do it at your house, we need extra hands to do it at our House. Help is needed with everyday tasks like washing laundry to vacuuming the floor, organizing the pantry to sweeping the patio, changing the lightbulbs to minor repairs.

SHARE YOUR TALENTS ~ Adult, Teens, Children, Group Opportunity

Love to entertain? Love to fix things? Love to do crafts? Everyone has something special to offer and we welcome you all - bakers, handymen, hairstylists, musicians, puppeteers, massage therapists, singers, phone callers, gardeners, organizers, cooks, window washers, seamstresses, photographers, party planners, and anyone else we missed.

PENNIES WITH A PURPOSE
Great for everyone
For a long time, our supporters have collected an impressive number of Pop Tabs for us. It takes a lot of time and effort to collect enough pop tabs to pay for a family’s lodging for one night, and with recent changes in the value of recycled metal, we have decided the same amount of effort will go a lot further if we collect pennies instead. We appreciate all the hard work you have put into our Pop Tab program in the past, and we look forward to your support for our new Pennies with a Purpose program.
