How close is the House to the hospital?

We are located directly across the street from Rady Children’s Hospital. The House sits on top of a 6-story parking garage.

Who can stay at the Ronald McDonald House?

Any family is eligible to stay at the Ronald McDonald House who has a child hospitalized at an area hospital. Priority to stay is assessed by the social/medical needs of the family, occupancy levels of the House, and the distance traveled to obtain treatment. The hospitalized patient must be eighteen (18) years of age or younger.

Prospective guests under the age of eighteen (18) years old must be registered by a parent, grandparent or legal guardian. With the exception of formally structured activities, RMHC-SD staff and volunteers do not provide supervision for minors.

Unaccompanied minor parents, who have a hospitalized child, must also be registered by a parent, grandparent or legal guardian.

How do I make arrangements to stay at the House?

You will need a referral from a hospital social worker, or your doctor or surgeon’s office.

How will I know I have a room?

Guest services staff will contact you directly to confirm your room. You may call guest services at 858-598-2401, 24 hours ahead of your arrival to check on availability.

How much does it cost to stay at the House?

Our cost to provide each family a room is about $148 per night. Families are asked to make a suggested donation of $15 for each night’s stay, and to provide a nonrefundable room deposit of $40, but no one is ever turned away for inability to pay. 

If a room is not available on our arrival date, what can we do?

The Ronald McDonald House will extend our discounted hotel rates to you if a room is not available at the House. The hotels are located within 5 or 10 minutes of the House.

Is there parking at the House?

Parking is available in the Rady Children’s Hospital parking garage, located below the House. The hospital offers a daily rate of $3 with hospital validation, or a weekly parking pass (see parking attendant for current rates).

Is it safe to be at the House?

The Ronald McDonald House is a very secure and safe place to stay. When you arrive, you will be issued an electronic keycard for your room. The House closes at 8:00 p.m. nightly to all day visitors and guests. 

Are there bathrooms in the rooms?

Yes, each room has a private bath, with a separate vanity space.

Is there Wi-Fi?

Yes, we have numerous Wi-Fi stations located throughout our facility.

What time should we arrive for check-in?

Check-ins are scheduled for after noon. Checkouts need to completed by 10:00 a.m. on the day of departure. Any exceptions to this must be arranged with guest services staff.

How many family members can stay?

Our rooms can accommodate four (4) to six (6) occupants.

Are there cribs or pack-and-plays?

We have a supply of pack-and-plays that can be delivered to your room if needed.

What do we need to bring with us?

  • Money you need for guest fees, transportation, parking, and other personal needs
  • Clothing changes for yourself and your child(ren)
  • Personal medications and hygiene supplies
  • Your child’s car seat and other safety equipment for your child(ren)
  • Any other personal supplies you need

Are meals provided?

Yes, we provide three meals each weekday, and breakfast and lunch on weekends. Meal times are: continental breakfast from 6:30 to 1030 a.m.; lunch from noon to 1:30 pm; dinner from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Refrigerated and pantry items are available outside of meal times. You can use our family kitchen to prepare meals.

How long can we stay?

The length of a family’s stay at the Ronald McDonald House is not solely determined by the length of hospitalization, and there is no guarantee as to length of stay. A family’s need for continued lodging is evaluated regularly by the Family Care Coordinator and House Manager. In the event that a room is unoccupied for more than forty-eight (48) hours, a guest will be asked to check out. House staff must be notified if the assigned family will be leaving for a short period only.
