The Journey Home

Raymundo and Annette Rodriguez stayed at the House unexpectedly in February 2009, when they learned that their newborn son, Samuel was struggling. They are now happily home with their son.  About one year later, they were back in touch with the House, to recollect their journey, and share news of how things have changed for the better. They also sent a very large “thank you” card signed by many friends, who collected a donation to support other families now finding themselves in need of staying at the House.

Annette wrote, “Samuel was born on February 4, 2009 at 4:01 am. By 3:00 pm, the transport team from Rady Children’s Hospital arrived to take Samuel to the NICU. Samuel was born full term, but displayed regulation difficulties, apnea, urological difficulties and possible seizure activity. As there were many questions to be answered about Samuel’s health, Rady Children’s Hospital was the best place for him to be.

My husband and I arrived to the NICU early the following day with breast pump, laptop, pillow and overnight bag in tow, as we were not sure what we would need for the day and if we were staying the night at the parent center. As you can imagine, after just giving birth, I was tired, uncomfortable and extremely worried for my son.

Luckily, my husband and the social worker at the NICU were able to arrange for us to stay at the Ronald McDonald House. We were there for 5 nights. It was such a blessing. No more long car rides home to Oceanside, where we felt so far from our son. No more trying to get some sleep in the chairs at the parent center. We were so happy to be close to our son. We could walk over for all his feedings, be there every time he needed us, or when the surgeons or doctors needed us. We were able to rest. I was able to heal.

We will always remember the wonderful, caring staff that looked after us and the great volunteers who fed us. Samuel is now 1 years old and doing great. We really want to thank the staff at the Ronald McDonald House for all their hard work and dedication. We want to thank you all for making a difference in the story of our family and for being there when we needed help the most. Thank you so much. - Raymundo, Annette and Samuel Rodriguez”

Raymundo and Annette's story reminds us of the support families need when their world turns upside down, and why we have been here for 30 years. We always enjoy hearing from families after they return home to their lives...because they become a part of our family forever.
