About Us McDonald's Relationship

Our Relationship with McDonald's

Mission Partner

Ronald McDonald House Charities is McDonald’s "charity of choice." McDonald's founder Ray Kroc helped to establish the first Ronald McDonald House, which opened in 1974 in Philadelphia.

San Diego's Ronald McDonald House was established in 1980 as the 20th location in a network that has grown to more than 320 Houses worldwide. We are grateful to McDonald's for its lead role in launching this critical support system for families in need.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego is a 501(c)(3) independent non-profit organization. McDonald's restaurants are our largest corporate donor. Portions of the annual operating costs for our Ronald McDonald House are graciously funded by McDonald's and its local restaurant owner/operators. The remainder of our annual operating income comes from the generosity of individuals, community groups, and corporate and foundation donors.

Donation boxes at local restaurants provide a key way for McDonald's customers to support Ronald McDonald House Charities programs.

McDonald’s involvement extends beyond monetary support:

  • Franchises partner with us for promotional and fundraising events.
  • McDonald’s employees volunteer with us.
  • McDonald's owners and operators serve on local boards.

Although McDonald’s is our largest corporate donor, no company can solely fund our programs and the growth needed to serve more families. We count on the support of the entire community!

We greatly value the contributions of volunteers and donors who so generously give their time and resources to help families at San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House.
