Frequently Asked Questions
About Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego

1. What do you do?I_girls_on_trikes

We provide a "home away from home" for families with children being treated for serious, often life-threatening conditions at local hospitals.

2. Is anyone else in San Diego doing the same thing?

We are the only organization that offers lodging and care for families with children being treated at any local hospital.

A few organizations offer lodging to families with patients at a specific hospital. Other organizations offer support groups, transportation assistance, and enrichment activities to families with critically ill children. Several of these organizations offer programs at our House.

3. Are you part of Rady Children’s Hospital?

No. While we work closely with Rady Children's Hospital, we are an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Around 85 percent of our guests have children at Rady Children's Hospital, with others at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital, UCSD Medical Center, and more.

4. McDonald’s pays for everything, right?

While McDonald's is our largest corporate contributor, the majority of our annual operating income comes from the generosity of individual donors.

San Diego's Ronald McDonald House is a community-supported resource that relies on contributions – including cash donations, time and fundraising efforts - from a whole range of individuals, organizations, businesses and groups.

5. When I make a gift to Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, does any of it go to a national organization or other Ronald McDonald Houses?

Your gift stays here–100 percent of it! We are an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, governed by an independent board of trustees. We are responsible for our own operations and fundraising.

6. Are families charged for their stay at the Ronald McDonald House?

We do not charge families to stay. We do ask them to contribute toward the cost of staying at the Ronald McDonald House as they are able. We suggest a donation of $15 per night, though our actual cost is around $140. We also ask families to consider making a contribution of $40 room for room set-up when they check in at our House. However, no one is turned away due to inability to pay.

Guests frequently tell their friends, family members, and co-workers about the value of being able to stay with us. Making a contribution to San Diego's Ronald McDonald House is a great way for friends and loved ones to show their support.

7. Can I visit the House?

Absolutely! Call the office at 858-467-4750 to arrange a tour.

8. Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes, gifts to Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego are deductible to the extent allowed by law. Please consult your legal and financial advisors for assistance.
