Feeding our families

Dear Laura,

Viejas Casino has long been a partner of the Ronald McDonald House in San Diego.  Click the photo below to watch our video on how they have helped the families and sick children at the House:

Also, on August 18th Viejas opened their hearts, hands and cupboards to treat the Ronald McDonald House residents, day patients and staff to a delicious, and well-deserved dinner.  The Viejas team, led by the spectacular Chef Arnold Lopez, cooked and served one the best meals the new House has seen since its opening.  The Latin themed menu consisted of beef enchiladas, beef barbecue (Barbacoa) tacos, beef fajita, black beans, rice, tortillas, green and fruit salad and flan for dessert.

This dinner was extra special because it was made possible by a substantial donation from the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians.  The Tribe recently donated over 700 pounds of meat to commemorate the grand opening of the new House.  The donation was made possible through the Junior Livestock Auction held at the Eastern San Diego County Junior Fair earlier this year where Viejas was the highest bidder for a 1,126 pound steer.  Viejas generously chose to donate the meat to Ronald McDonald House, which will feed roughly 400 families throughout the year.

"We are grateful to Chef Arnold and Viejas for their tremendous generosity to these families as they go through some of the most difficult challenges of their lives," said Bill Lennartz, President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego.

Chef Arnold is no stranger to Ronald McDonald House.  He has been cooking and serving quarterly dinners on his days off for the House for several years (as seen in the video above), and has made quite the reputation for himself. In fact, the dinner Viejas served on the 18th drew the largest crowd the new House had seen to date!

Thank you Viejas!  We are already craving your next dinner on December 15.

2009 Kicks for Kids Program

2009 Kicks for Kids Program

Join Chargers Players Nate Kaeding and Mike Scifres in Supporting the House

San Diego Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding (#10) has a new teammate joining him at Ronald McDonald House of San Diego, to launch the second annual Kicks for Kids program for the 2009 Chargers Football Season. Chargers punter Mike Scifres (#5) has committed to unite with Nate and punt for the kids this year.  The teammates have pledged to support San Diego's Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) for the second annual pledge-driven Kicks For Kids program to support the new Ronald McDonald House and help make life easier for families with sick children.

San Diegans are asked to pledge any amount for each field goal kicked by Kaeding and each punt inside the 20 made by Scifres during the 2009 regular season games, or fans can make a one-time donation.  All contributions are tax deductible.  Last year Kaeding kicked 26 successful field goals and Scifres made 31 successful punts.

A message from Nate Kaeding to anyone thinking about pledging: "Seeing the families at Ronald McDonald House firsthand, I realize how important it is for the community to help these families in crisis. My field goals count for the Chargers and for families in need and I encourage everyone who can to help through Kicks for Kids."

A message from Mike:  "Your pledge dollars will help give San Diego area families of seriously ill children a ‘home away from home."  Visit Mike's website to learn more too: http://www.mikescifres.com/

Donations can be made by visiting the Kicks For Kids campaign website at
http://www.sdkicksforkids.com/ or by clicking on the Kicks For Kids link from the San Diego Chargers website at http://www.chargers.com/.

Make a pledge using the form found on the website.

For each pledge, donors will receive:

  • An exclusive membership into Nate's Locker, his personal e-club. After every game, fans will get an email update from Nate sharing his take on the game

·   An official Kicks for Kids pin (for every pledge of $1 or more per field goal)

·   A Kicks for Kids magnet

Supporters will also be entered into a drawing for a chance to win:

  • A pizza party for 20 with Nate and Mike at Ronald McDonald House.

·   Pledges of $2 or more per field goal qualify for drawing at end of season.

A field goal and punt tally and pledge reminder email will be sent at the end of the season.  For more information on Kicks For Kids, visit http://www.sdkicksforkids.com/ or call (858) 467-4750.

Our Volunteers: Young Philanthropists

Working hard to help the House

Our Volunteers: Young Philanthropists"My daughters, Sydney (8) and Kira (6), are kind, loving, and generous girls, but they definitely have the 'What’s in it for me?' mentality. My husband, James, and I thought it was high time that they should understand that “what’s in it for them” does not always have to be of monetary value.

We began with a charity box. Each week, from their small allowances, one dollar from each of them goes into the charity box. Over time, they had gathered $28 dollars, and it was time to show them what we could do with that money.

An Internet search brought us to the Ronald McDonald House. We called for more information, and the helpful staff indicated that they would be more than happy to take our donation, no matter how small. I learned of the other opportunities to contribute at the House.

We decided to collect pop tabs to go with our donation, so my daughters and I spent some time popping tabs off soda cans.

However, I still hoped to do more with the kids on this effort, so we decided to raise even more money with a lemonade stand. Anything we could offer, even an extra $5-$10, would be helpful.

Dad was now also recruited to help with the project. Soon our mission became a community event with neighbor, Marni and her daughters, Bryn and Alina, joining in.

After much work, we opened our stand, on a late Friday afternoon, with the hopes of making an extra $5-10 dollars. Our prep worked paid off: after only two hours of sales, and generous neighbors, our little stand brought in a total of $148.21!

The following week we went down to the Ronald McDonald House with our profits and pop tops in hand, and a nice family and neighborhood story to go with our contributions. We were thrilled with our work, and even more so with the reaction of the kind people at the House.

Our girls left that day feeling the benefits of their charitable work and contributions for families who needed our help. And, though they are still young, they have the beginnings of understanding that it is definitely better to give than to receive."

Our Families: The Williams Family

Your support made their stay possible

Our Families: The Williams FamilyThe Williamses were grade school sweethearts growing up in Virginia. The two were married a few years ago and Christine Williams became a stay-at- home mom when they had their first born son, Amari. Mr. Williams serves in the United States Army and was recently transferred to Hawaii. Shortly after their move, they learned they were expecting their second child.

Christine Williams had a very "normal" pregnancy as it was very similar to her first experience with Amari. However, hours after their second son, Jayden, was born his nurse noticed his breathing wasn't normal. He was treated for jaundice but days later his nurses knew something was still wrong. When Jayden was one week old, the Williams were informed he had a congenital heart defect. He needed heart surgery, and the hospital in Hawaii was unable to perform the delicate procedure that Jayden required. The Williams were told to go home, pack and prepare to fly to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego. Within hours of receiving the news they boarded a C-17 military plane with Jayden, his four year old brother, two nurses, a doctor and other military personnel. The family was medically transported to the hospital and the following day they were admitted to the Ronald McDonald House.

The Williamses are grateful for Ronald McDonald House. Christine has said, "Being able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House so close to our son and not having to worry about cooking, or doing laundry or things to do to keep our other son entertained has been such a relief. We have never been to San Diego and don't know where anything is, so the amenities and the weekly transportation to the store has been so much help."

Jayden successfully had his heart surgery last month and after six weeks at Ronald McDonald House the family hopes to return to Hawaii in the coming days.

LEARN HOW TO BAKE ORGANIC CUPCAKES

The secrets of how to bake organic cupcakes will be taught by Michelle Ciccarelli Lerach, chef and owner of Cups, a catering business in La Jolla, at a one-day class Sept. 27 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the new Ronald McDonald House, 2929 Children's Way in San Diego. Lerach will create four different cupcakes, including the Ronald McDonald House Love Cup, a lemon-vanilla bean cup with lemon curd center, topped with lemonade Swiss meringue frosting and fresh strawberries. For every Love Cup sold, half of the proceeds will be donated to the new Ronald McDonald House.

Come for a hands-on cupcake baking experience - participants can purchase a ticket for $125 to get into the kitchen and bake with Lerach and learn how to make batters, frostings, fillings and toppings. Held in the six-island kitchen at the new Ronald McDonald House, bakers will crack the eggs, mix the sugar, scoop the flour, pop them in the oven and then decorate.

For $85, attendees get to sit in the audience and view all the processes and techniques the Cups chef uses to make cupcakes. Audience members will also be given the opportunity to decorate and frost their own cupcakes at several decorating islands and take their creations home. All participants will receive a favors bag filled with their own cupcake creations, Cups goodies, and coupons to use at Cups' La Jolla location. To register for the baking class, call (858) 467-4750, Ext. 2445 or visit http://www.rmhcsd.org/.

Benziger Winery has been extremely generous to the Ronald McDonald House, donating several cases for our recent Red Shoe Ball as well as several events last year!  We had so many people asking how they could get their hands on some of the Imagery Series Petite Sirah that was featured at the Red Shoe Ball that Benziger agreed to do even more for us.  They have made the 2006 vintage available to our supporters and will give 10% of the revenue back to the Ronald McDonald House!

Leave a legacyOne Year Estate Tax Extension Predicted

In a financial planning webcast on September 2, 2009, John Buckley, Chief Tax Counsel for the House Ways and Means Committee, discussed the estate tax.

In response to a question on future plans for the estate tax he responded, "I think one reason you will probably see a one-year extension this year is statutory pay-go."

Mr. Buckley is referring to the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act of 2009 (H.R. 2920). This bill passed the House in June. If it is enacted, it exempts some expenditures and tax provisions, including the permanent extension of estate and gift taxes at 2009 levels.

However, because the Senate may not pass the bill, the permanent extension of the $3.5 million exemption and the 45% top estate tax rate would cost $233 billion over 10 years. With the current deficit, it is quite probable that the Senate will not pass a permanent estate tax extension but will instead extend the 2009 estate tax provisions for one more year.

Editor's Note: A one year "patch" still leaves the estate planning world in a state of uncertainty. With the large budget deficit numbers from CBO, there are senators who privately suggest that the estate exemption could revert to $1 million in 2011. While this does not seem to be a very likely action by the Senate, it continues to create uncertainty for estate planners.
