19th Annual Golf Tournament a Success
Golfers Tee Off, Spa-goers Renew Mind,
Body to Support Families
The 19th Annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Golf
Tournament and Spa Day raised over $100,000 for the Charity and
the families that we support.
The
Crosby at Rancho Santa Fe was the setting for the second
year in a row. 128 golfers came out to support the Ronald
McDonald House of San Diego. A near-perfect day for golf,
donors and corporate sponsors enjoyed a barbecue lunch, drinks all
day on the course, a cocktail hour, an amazing dinner and dessert,
and silent and live auctions. Flip and Rollie provided
hip music to the party, while 200 guests enjoyed the delicious tastes
of California
Quivers drinks and hors d'oeuvres.
A Spa Day experience was added this year, and judging by the
participant comments, it was a great success. Laurie
McClaine of K.
Ann Brizolis & Associates provided
a private home in the Bridges. The
pampering started with limo transportation for 80 women, followed
by luxury and cutting-edge medical spa treatments including
facials, manicures, massages, hand treeatments, teeth whitening,
and make-overs from Bellus Academy. Tobi
Blatt highlighted some of the Fall
and Winter seasons fashions
with an interactive fashion show. Barefoot Wine & Bubbly
poured five flavors of champagne and white wine. Thanks to
all sponsors who made this day special.
The event was such a success that the Ronald McDonald House Charities
was able to provide nearly 100 nights of Housing and services for
families in need!
We are already planning for next years tournament. If you would
like to be on the Tournament Committee, contact Susi Marquez at 858-598-2413.
A big Thank You to the Golf Committee, Frank Ruyak, Peter Middleton,
Tom Tucker, Will Priest, Ed Wallace, and Dan Klunk, and to the Spa
Committee, Bambi Schulman, Erica Dill, Heather Campbell, Karen Clark,
and Melinda Neill. And a special thanks to the many
volunteers.
Special thanks to
our sponsors:

Our Volunteers - North Island Credit Union
North Island Credit Union Volunteers
(pictured left to right):
Alexis Ybarra, Ruth
Duncan, Ciera Ybarra, Ian Dillingham, Geri Dillingham, Pam Willmoth,
Gary Bryant, Hennie Concepcion, Julie Doyle, Rita Towler, Andrea
Klein, Jessica Rapaido-Ybarra and Martin Doyle.
Why We Chose
to Volunteer at the RMH:
North Island Credit
Union (NICU) shares a unique relationship with the Ronald McDonald
House Charities San Diego (RMHCSD). Our involvement came about as a
natural progression from the close banking relationship we
established with the organization. We funded the loan to help build
the new house and since then the professional relationship has
developed into a personal one as well. Professionally, it has been
our pleasure to help this organization make a difference in the
community. And as individuals who have worked directly in some shape
or form with this organization, it is our personal pleasure to be
able to make a difference in the lives of the family members who come
to The House for assistance.
"I think
anyone who visits the house would naturally want to get involved as a
volunteer." (Gary Bryant)
Our Experience:
On Saturday, August
15th, staff from North Island Credit Union and their family
volunteered for about 3 hours to provide the main meal for the
families staying at or utilizing the facilities of the new Ronald
McDonald House. Our group planned the menu, shopped for the
food, prepared and served the food, and cleaned up
afterwards. The "Fiesta Theme" menu consisted of
barbecued carne and pollo asada, refried beans, homemade Spanish
rice, tortillas, salad, fruit, cookies, El Indio tortilla chips and
salsa, and beverages. The families were tremendously appreciative and
so were the people at the Ronald McDonald House!
This was a very
positive and gratifying experience for all of us involved. In fact,
many of us expressed the desire to continue volunteering regularly
perhaps on a quarterly basis.
"It was a great
way to spend time with our North Island team mates and do something
for others." (Pam Willmoth)
Stories That Touched
Us:
A young man came up to
me and said he and his mother really appreciated what we were doing
and they wanted to help out so he gave me $20 and he was very
insistent that I keep the $20...so I told him I would place it in the
donation box up front. (Gary Bryant)
I was so touched when
Julie Doyle and I went to serve a man that came in a bit late, but
then stopped by when he was finished to say, "Thank you,
this is the best meal I have had all week!" It made us
cry. (Pam Willmoth)
I recall a young lady
with her two children - an older son in a wheelchair and an active,
but also tired little daughter. She was trying to give both her
children her undivided attention, but you can see how difficult it
was for her. As she was returning to the hospital, she put her
daughter on her son's lap, and tried to find a way to carry the food.
Seeing her frustration, I put the food into a plastic bag to make it
a little easier. She was very grateful and her expression alone made
my experience even more meaningful. Volunteering helps us to realize
how sometimes a simple gesture can make all the difference in another
person's life. It's such a great feeling (Jessica
Rapaido-Ybarra)

Our Families - The Morses
A Mother and Father and a One in a Million Baby

My name is Isabel Morse and I was living the American
dream as a mother, wife and kindergarten teacher. In June
2008, my third child, Aydin was born and soon after he was born my
husband, Ernest and I knew he was not healthy. In his first
few weeks of life, Aydin had numerous eating and breathing complications.
At one month old, Aydin had a gagging episode and we
had to call 911. We were unable to ride in the ambulance to
the hospital and I remember feeling helpless. Following the
ambulance, I wondered what would happen to our baby. When we
arrived at the hospital in El Centro we were told he was in
desperate need of specialized care. Aydin was flown to San
Diego and we frantically drove two hours from El Centro to San
Diego. Our son was hospitalized ten times in his first year
of life and was recently diagnosed with a severe form of Congenital
Myasthenic Syndrome. My baby's condition only affects one in
a million people. I never thought I
would I need to stay at the House or have a child
hospitalized. During a very difficult time for my child and
family, the Ronald McDonald House has provided us with support and
a home. It has been a place of refuge and a place where our
family can stay together. My children especially enjoy the
computer room, basketball court and love to see what's cooking in
the kitchen. I am so grateful to have the Ronald McDonald House
because it provides all the comforts of home and more. The
generosity has truly been a blessing in our lives and one day I
hope to do the same for others. I am thankful for the House
and all that it does.
Gratefully,
Isabel Morse

Families Served in the Home Away From Home
New Ronald McDonald House Fills Great Need
As
you know by now, we moved families into a brand new, greatly expanded
and improved Ronald McDonald House in early July. What has this
meant to the families we serve?
In September, the House was a ‘home away from home' for 83
families, double what we served in an average month at the
previous House. Just think, with your support, we were
able to provide all basic daily needs to 83 families, allowing
them to focus their full attention on their seriously ill
children.
These families had children in Rady Children's Hospital, Sharp Mary
Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns, Kaiser Hospital, and even
Paradise Valley Hospital in the South Bay. Eighteen
percent call Imperial Valley home, while 25% came from Riverside
County, 30% from San Diego County, and 16% from out of state.
Day use services were used a total
of 1,771 times in September. With more room and more resources, over 1,300
individuals who were not staying at the House, but also have
seriously ill children being treated, were able to use a bed
for a nap, relax in one of the TV Rooms, use the
Computer Resource Center, or one of the many other resources now
available.
1,644 meals were served, to 713
guests and 629 day visitors.
Volunteers provided 3,333 hours of their
valuable time in September, an amazing number.
Remember, the House operates 24 hours per day (so three shilfts),
seven days a week. Thank you, Volunteers! We could not
meet our mission without your help.

RMH COO Honored as Community Champion
COO SANDY CAMARILLO HONORED AS COMMUNITY CHAMPION

On
October 6, unsung heroes who
work behind the scenes to make San Diego a better place were honored
at the second annual Molina Healthcare of California Community
Champions Awards dinner. The Molina Healthcare Community Champions
event was named in honor of Molina Healthcare's physician founder,
Dr. C. David Molina. Over 200 people attended the awards dinner and
festivities.
Sandy Camarillo,
our Chief Operating Officer, was honored as the Support Group and
Service Club Community Champion.
During the awards
dinner and reception, Sandy was one of eight San Diego residents
recognized as everyday heroes for their civic
contributions. She received a trophy and a $1,000 grant
for RMHC-SD.
"Molina
Healthcare is proud to honor the San Diego champions who have gone
above and beyond in their communities each day," said Lisa
Rubino, president of Molina Healthcare of California. "The
community selected committed individuals and organizations as their
champions. Molina Healthcare is pleased to recognize and partner with
them in meeting the fundamental needs of underserved people in every
community. Their spirit of service, commitment and caring embodies
the philosophy of our founder, and we are privileged to recognize
their contributions."
Last year, House Manager Gabi Rivers received an award
for her work.
Congratulations
Sandy, from everyone at the Ronald McDonald House who has benefitted
from your dedication, generosity and caring support!

Help families with sick children
One Year Estate Tax Extension
Predicted
In a financial planning webcast on September 2, 2009, John Buckley,
Chief Tax Counsel for the House Ways and Means Committee, discussed
the estate tax.
In response to a question on future plans for the estate tax he
responded, "I think one reason you will probably see a one-year
extension this year is statutory pay-go."
Mr. Buckley is referring to the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act of 2009
(H.R. 2920). This bill passed the House in June. If it is enacted, it
exempts some expenditures and tax provisions, including the permanent
extension of estate and gift taxes at 2009 levels.
However, because the Senate may not pass the bill, the permanent
extension of the $3.5 million exemption and the 45% top estate tax
rate would cost $233 billion over 10 years. With the current deficit,
it is quite probable that the Senate will not pass a permanent estate
tax extension but will instead extend the 2009 estate tax provisions
for one more year.
Editor's Note: A one year "patch" still leaves the estate
planning world in a state of uncertainty. With the large budget
deficit numbers from CBO, there are senators who privately suggest
that the estate exemption could revert to $1 million in 2011. While
this does not seem to be a very likely action by the Senate, it
continues to create uncertainty for estate planners.

with sick children?
