For the past two months Maricol and Florante Drame
family have called the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) "Home".
The Drames were living the American dream, immigrating to this
country more than 12 years ago from the Philippines. They settled on
Kauai and both work for corn companies. After three years of trying
Maricol and Florante learned they were going to finally be
parents. Six months pregnant Maricol found out her baby had a heart
problem. She had to fly frequently from Kauai to Oahu for weekly
ultrasounds. Three weeks prior to the birth of their daughter the
Drames were told to move to Oahu until the baby was born.
McKennah was born on December 21, 2008.
Immediately after she was born it was discovered she had other
serious problems. In addition, to the double ventricle outlet heart
problem she had serious intestinal problems and a blockage in her nose
that affected her breathing.
Days later the Drames were told their daughter's best chance of
survival would be to have her medivaced to Rady's Children's
Hospital. At 11 days old, she was stable enough
to fly air ambulance with a cardiac surgeon and two nurses from RCH.
The Drames flew to San Diego commercially later that same day.
That night they had a room waiting for them at the Ronald McDonald
House.
Knowing that they didn't have to worry about a place to stay was a
great relief during such a traumatic time. The Drames' are most
thankful for being able to stay at the House and appreciate its close
proximity to the hospital.
"It's nice to be across the street from our daughter and
know we can come and go as we need to."
McKennah had her first heart surgery shortly after arriving
in San Diego where a shunt was placed in her heart. She
recently had another surgery to insert a feeding tube. She has also
had corrective intestinal surgeries. The Drames are hoping to return
home in the next few weeks, where McKennah will have her next heart
surgery in about six months to repair a hole in her heart. But
in the mean time, they are thankful that they have the Ronald
McDonald House to call home.

Turn Tired Wheels into Donation $$

What do a 1985
Pace Arrow 28' motorhome, a 2000 Cadillac DeVille, a Four Winns 23'
Vista boat, a 1992 BMW 735, and a 1993 Jayco 12' Pop-Up Tent
Trailer have in common? I can hear those heads being
scratched! All of these vehicles were among others recently
donated to the Ronald McDonald House, resulting in thousands of
dollars in additional support for the House.
Do you have a vehicle that is no longer needed, that you would like
to see gone? Our agent, Action Donation Services, makes all
the arrangements, even towing the car if it is no longer running,
all at no cost to the donor. Still not sure if this is a good
idea for your vehicle? Action Donation
Services evaluates each vehicle to maximize the selling price
and therefore the donor's tax deduction and gift to the Ronald
McDonald House.
For instance, an eight year old car that isn't running is towed to
their garage and evaluated. It is found the fuel pump isn't
working, and so is replaced, and the car is now in running
condition. Action also details each vehicle. The result
is a sales price three
times that if it were not repaired! Even
after expenses are deducted, the donor still has a higher tax
deduction than if it had been sold while not running.
One doesn't have to be in San Diego, or even California, to
make a vehicle donation. Action Donation Services operates
nationwide: we recently received donations from Virginia,
Georgia, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
It's almost too good to be true! You get rid of that unneeded
vehicle, Action Donation Services makes reasonable repairs to
maximize the sales prices, the donor gets a maximum tax deduction,
and Ronald McDonald House gains important support for its
programs. It's that simple. Call Action Donation
Services at 619-296-4483 today, or click
here, and designate your vehicle to the Ronald McDonald House
of San Diego.

Our Partners: Circle Foods
Tortillas, Tamales, and Taquitos oh my!
Ronald
McDonald House receives a weekly tortilla donation thanks to our good
friends at Circle Foods. This donation allows many of the
parents staying with us and those who are also just visiting
from the hospital to cook a quick meal for
their family and themselves and then return to their
sick child.
Not only are we receiving tortillas, but our guests and
visitors are also treated to tamales and
taquitos! It is amazing to see businesses such as
Circle Foods reaching out to make a difference and support our
efforts in providing a comfortable environment for families staying
at the Ronald McDonald House.
A few words from
Eric Brenk, Claridge Food Group - Circle Foods/La Terra Fina Foods:
"Circle Foods
has always taken a great deal of pride in giving back to our local
community. When the company discovered the opportunity to work
with families in need through the Ronald McDonald House in San Diego,
we worked diligently to put all the pieces in place.
We are honored
to participate in such a wonderful effort which helps families at such
a critical time in their lives, when one of their loved ones is
ill. Many of us at Circle Foods are parents or grandparents and
know of, or have experienced directly ourselves, the impact to a
family when a child is ill or injured.
The tremendous undertaking
managed across the country by the Ronald McDonald House Charities
speaks volumes to how we can all help one another survive even the
biggest of challenges. If we can help out by offering some of our
food products to the cause, the privilege is all ours. We
are excited to play what small part we can in San Diego and now look
forward to the possibility of expanding our contributions to the San
Francisco area as well. From there, we understand a few more Ronald
McDonald House locations might also be well within our reach."

Spare Change Adds Up Quick
Pesky pennies, nuisance nickels,
dented dimes, and even quarters, all belong in a place where
they are appreciated, instead of stuck in the couch, the easy
chair, or the ashtray of your car!
Gather them up and get them ready for your next trip to
McDonald's. Every one has a convenient cannister just
for your spare change. It doesn't have to be just the few
pennies and nickels you get in change when you buy a meal!
So remember, next trip to McDonald's, make an easy donation to the
Ronald McDonald House, and get your couch and car cleaned up at the
same time! Those pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters
collected will add up quick when collected from all over the
County! Thanks for your support!
