June - Other Ways to Help
Wine, Photos, food, and more!

Benziger Winery has been extremely generous to
the Ronald McDonald House, donating several cases for our
recent Red Shoe Ball as well as several events last year! We
had so many people asking how they could get their hands on
some of the Imagery Series Petite Sirah that was featured at
the Red Shoe Ball that Benziger agreed to do even more for
us. They have made the 2006 vintage available to our
supporters and will give 10% of the revenue back to the Ronald
McDonald House!
Follow this link to buy some of this amazing wine and for another
way to give back to the House!

The Ronald McDonald House Charities has
recently partnered with Julie Edwards Photography (http://www.jedwardsphotographer.com/) for
a unique fundraising opportunity. Julie is a San Diego area
photographer that specializes in family and children's portraits.
She has agreed to donate her session fee ($100.00 per child) during
indicated sessions (be sure to mention the Ronald McDonald House
when booking your session) directly to the Ronald McDonald House.
With 100 sessions available throughout 2009, she has
already raised over $2,000 and hopes to raise a total of
$10,000 for our families! Thank you Julie - you rock!

Family Lunch Brings Donors and Families Together
On Thursday, May 28th donors came
together for an intimate "Family Lunch" at the new Ronald
McDonald House. Donors had the opportunity to meet the Bingham
family, enjoy a VIP tour of the new 47-guestroom House, and see
first-hand how their philanthropy is making a difference in
families' lives. Family Lunches are not fundraisers but a way of
connecting donors to the cause that they so generously support.
Fourteen attendees enjoyed donated McDonald's salads and cookies
and donated Quiznos subs.
We are hosting three future Family Lunches:
Thursday, July 16th at 11:30 a.m.
Thursday, August 27th at 11:30 a.m.
Thursday, October 22nd at 11:30 a.m.
If you would like to RSVP with a guest or have any
questions, please contact Liam Dunfey at ldunfey@rmhcsd.org or (858) 467-4750

Last October, the Lilly and Edgar Oropeza of Imperial
County had their lives turned upside down. Edgar was laid off of his
job just a few months after the birth of their third son. Lilly began
to look for work. Then their middle child, two year old Abram, began
feeling ill. He looked pale and had no energy and was very lethargic.
Lilly took Abram to the pediatrician thinking that he may be anemic.
The following day she was offered a position at the hospital in El
Centro; hours later she was given life-changing news at that same
hospital: her son had leukemia. Their children's pediatrician
told Lilly to quickly gather her belongings and head to Rady
Children's Hospital in San Diego.
After receiving this news, Lilly was able to stay
composed until she got in her car where she called her mother. Her
mother encouraged her to stay strong and said she would be there to
assist Lilly and her family in whatever way possible. Her second call
was to her husband: as a youth, Edgar lost his sister to cancer.
Edgar's mom had stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in the 1990's and
Lilly knew that her husband would have an exceptionally difficult
time with the news.
Lilly left her five month old and seven year old sons
with their father and left for San Diego with Abram and her mom.
Abram was admitted to Rady Children's Hospital the same day he was
diagnosed. The following day Lily and her mom were given a room at
the House where they lived for the next seven weeks. For the past
seven months Lilly and Abram have been staying frequently at the
House while Abram receives outpatient chemotherapy.
Lilly is very grateful to be staying the House.
Her favorite thing is how the House feels like family and it really
feels like a home. Abram often says, "I want to go home, home to
my room at the House." Abram and the staff at the House
have grown quite fond of each other. Abram cries when staff leaves,
and staff cry when Abram isn't quite himself.
Abram has a contagious smile and can often be found
pushing cars, trucks or motorcycles down the halls of the House. He
also loves to set up his dinosaurs throughout the
House.
Abram has an encouraging prognosis and will be
receiving treatment at Rady Children's Hospital and UCSD for the next
two and a half years. Currently, he is staying at the Ronald McDonald
House while he receives chemotherapy four times a week.

Did you know, the New Ronald McDonald House....
- is designed to be 17.5% more energy efficient
than required by the California energy code.
- has a ‘cool roof,' light colored to
reflect the sun's heat and decrease energy needed to cool the
building.
- will save 226,000 gallons of water each year,
compared to a standard building
- provides increased ventilation, providing
much more fresh air than a standard building, in order to
increase guest (and staff!) comfort and wellbeing.
Builders also made it a priority to include materials
produced with a significant amount of recycled content, in order to
reduce the stress on virgin materials and mitigate environmental
impacts.
In addition, builders diverted 60% of all construction
waste from landfills, a total of 232 tons!
The roof is also designed for future installation of a solar panel
system, which will reduce the amount of energy required.
