Light-a-Light, Share-a-Night Summary

Light-a-Light, Share-a-Night Summary

Thank you to everyone who helped!

The Ronald McDonald House of San Diego would like to thank all of those who so generously donated to our Light-a-Light, Share-a-Night campaign.  Our goal was to raise 50,592 to provide a room for all the families and children staying at the House during the 31 nights in December.

We are pleased to announce that we not only met our goal, but exceeded it!  Over $56,000 was raised in December allowing us to provide a place to call home for the 49 families that stayed with us last month.  Not only that, families coming back from visiting their child at the hospital were treated to a very well lit and decorated Ronald McDonald House to give them a little Holiday cheer!

Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who supported us through in-kind donations of toys and gifts as well as food and other necessary supplies!

Our Families: Allhouse

Our Families: Allhouse

Our Families: Allhouse

In November, parents Steven and Selina along with their children Savannah and Selia eagerly awaited the birth of newest addition to their family - Sofie, a baby girl. However, things didn't go as planned. Hours after Sofie's birth she was transported to Rady Children's Hospital. It was soon discovered that Sofie had patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). PDA is a condition in which a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus fails to close normally in an infant soon after birth. The condition leads to abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery, two major blood vessels surrounding the heart.

Steven traveled to San Diego with his newborn Sofie while mom Selina recovered in the hospital. Steven and Selina have no transporation or family that lives near them so getting to the hospital in itself was a challenge.

Steven, recalls his first night in the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) staying up very late with staff trying to figure out the most direct bus route for his wife and children. Selina arrived with her other two daughters days later. The Ronald McDonald House was a blessing for this family they were able to stay together as a family and not worry about transportation or food. The family was able to stay at the House for 6 out of the 8 weeks Sofie was in the neonatal intensive care unit. Following a weekend visit in Thermal (California) Selina returned to the House feeling that she was returning to her second "home". She said "it really was a home away from home".

Sofie also has severe reflex and had a corrective surgery on Christmas Eve. She had a feeding tube inserted which will hopefully be removed in six months. The family was recently discharged and is back home in Thermal. And Savannah and Selia finally were able to hold their new sister after two months!

Selina told us that the Ronald McDonald House "was a comfort during the holidays as well as the friends I made there not only staff, but other house guests! Everyone was so helpful and understanding!  Thanks again for everything!"

Thank you to all of our supporters for making these types of experiences possible for hundreds of other families that we help each year!

Vehicle Donations

Turn Tired Wheels into Donation $$

Vehicle Donations

What do a 1985 Pace Arrow 28' motorhome, a 2000 Cadillac DeVille, a Four Winns 23' Vista boat, a 1992 BMW 735, and a 1993 Jayco 12' Pop-Up Tent Trailer have in common?  I can hear those heads being scratched!  All of these vehicles were among others recently donated to the Ronald McDonald House, resulting in thousands of dollars in additional support for the House.

Do you have a vehicle that is no longer needed, that you would like to see gone?  Our agent, Action Donation Services, makes all the arrangements, even towing the car if it is no longer running, all at no cost to the donor.  Still not sure if this is a good idea for your vehicle?  Action Donation Services evaluates each vehicle to maximize the selling price and therefore the donor's tax deduction and gift to the Ronald McDonald House.

For instance, an eight year old car that isn't running is towed to their garage and evaluated.  It is found the fuel pump isn't working, and so is replaced, and the car is now in running condition.  Action also details each vehicle.  The result is a sales price three times that if it were not repaired!  Even after expenses are deducted, the donor still has a higher tax deduction than if it had been sold while not running.

One doesn't have to be in San Diego, or even California, to make a vehicle donation.  Action Donation Services operates nationwide:  we recently received donations from Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.

It's almost too good to be true!  You get rid of that unneeded vehicle, Action Donation Services makes reasonable repairs to maximize the sales prices, the donor gets a maximum tax deduction, and Ronald McDonald House gains important support for its programs.  It's that simple.  Call Action Donation Services at 619-296-4483 today, or click here, and designate your vehicle to the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego.

Year Round Volunteer Opportunities

BECOME AN IN-HOUSE VOLUNTEER
Great for Adults

Support our "home-away-from-home" atmosphere.  As a volunteer, you may answer the telephone, prepare for our programs, check families in and out, do some light housekeeping and accomodate the general needs of the families.  After a screening process, we'll give you the training you need.  Three-hour shifts are available from 9 a.m. to midnight, every day of the year.

BECOME AN ADMINISTRATIVE VOLUNTEER
Great for Adults

More than ever before, we need voluteers in our Charities office (located just down the street from the House).  Here, you'll greet visitors, answer and direct phone calls and assist with mailings, filing and data entry.

COOK IT UP!
Great for groups, adults, teens, children

Prepare and serve a meal any night of the week at 6 p.m. Monday - Saturday or 12 noon on Sunday.  Or, bake special treats like muffins or cookies at your house or ours.  We always appreciate fresh fruit or vegetable trays for our families!

ASSIST AT SPECIAL EVENTS
Great for Groups, Adults
We have several events throughout the year, including some annual favorites: "House for the House" Raffle, Golf Tounament, Gala and Casino Night. Help with these fundraisers and more!

COLLECT POP TABS
Great for Groups, Adults, Teens, Children
Believe it or not, that tab you pull to open your soda can is like a little gold nugget to the Ronald McDonald House!  It's made of high-grade aluminum that we recycle, generating money to support programs for children and families at the house: therapeutic arts, knitting, off-site activities and more.  Save tabs at home or work and get your friends and neighbors involved in this incredibly easy way to support RMH!  Pop tab collection houses are available at the House; however, decorated shoeboxes and plastic bags work well, too.

ORGANIZE A FUNDRAISER OR WISH LIST DRIVE
Great for Groups, Adults, Teens, Children
Be Creative!  We welcome new ideas.  Why not get a group together and have some fun with a dog or car wash, hold a bake sale or suggest "Denim Days" at work?  If you'd like to target specific items, we are happy to provide you with our most current Wish List.  Please let us know before you organize the fundraiser so that we have accurate details in case there are any questions.

SHOP AT ALBERTSONS
Great for Groups, Adults, Teens, Children

Register with us, then shop at Albertsons, Sav-On Drugs or Osco Drug stores - using your Preferred Savings Card as you usually do.  Through the Albertsons Community Partners Program, Ronald McDonald House of San Diego will receive a percentage of your purchases in the form of a cash contribution from Albertsons, Inc.  It is really easy!  Help us find more supporters by e-mailing, calling or simply talking to family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and more about this program.

REJUVENATE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
Great for Groups, Adults, Teens, Children

Help the House shine! Projects may include gardening, painting and housekeeping.

PREPARE GIFTS FOR OUR FAMILIES
Great for Groups, Adults, Teens, Children

Create Toiletry Totes (small bags of basic toiletries), Big Packs
(welcome bags) and Recreation Rucksacks (activity kits for children and parents to take to and from the hospital).  Each gift you assemble should include specific items - we can provide you with lists - but can be customized for a specific gender.  Include a special "We're thinking of you!" note to add a personal touch.

GATHER BIRTHDAY GOODIES
Great for Groups, Adults, Teens, Children

Help us make birthdays for our families at RMH memorable by gathering materials to use on their special day: streamers, signs, wrapping paper, presents, gift cards to bakeries and more.  Patients, siblings and parents alike celebrate birthdays, so items can be for all ages (baby to adult) and gender-specific.  Themes are great, too - Disney princesses, Spongebob Squarepants, Star Wars...the choices are endless!

COLLECT YOUR QUARTERS
Great for Groups, Adults, Teens, Children
Do you know what your quarter is worth? For 25 cents, we can buy one pound of eggs, milk or yogurt through a partnership with San Diego Food Bank.  For our families, these dairy items are key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle while staying at or visiting Ronald McDonald House, so please pull out those piggy banks!

SAVE YOUR COUPONS
Great for Groups, Adults

Those Bed, Bath & Beyond and Linens 'n' Things coupons that come in the mail all the time are useful to Ronald McDonald House, so instead of recycling the ones you don't need, please mail them to us!

SHARE YOUR TALENTS
Great for Groups, Adults, Teens, Children
Love to fix things?  Become a House Handyman!  We also welcome many other talents - bakers, massage therapists and more!  We'd love to hear your ideas.
