2009 Dream House Raffle!

2008 Kicks for Kids Campaign A Success!

2008 Kicks for Kids Campaign A Success!

Kicks for Kids Campaign A Success!

Thanks go to San Diego Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding and the hundreds of Ronald McDonald House supporters who made donations and pledges to the 2008 Kicks for Kids campaign.  Nate provided extra excitement for those who pledged as we watched the Chargers throughout the season, and into the second round of playoffs before falling to the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Nate had his best season yet, kicking 27 field goals during the regular season, and adding one in each of two playoff games, for a season total of 29.  Thanks Nate!

The campaign raised a total of just over $22,000, from pledges of $1 all the way up to $50 per kick.  Special thanks to AMN Healthcare and their employees.  AMN held special rallies and sent out regular e-mails encouraging  their employees to participate, and then partially matched those pledges.  Thank you to Bank of America for also participating and getting their employees involved!

Football season starts up again in August so be on the lookout for Nate Kaeding and the Ronald McDonald House's Kicks for Kids campaign.  Maybe you will be the lucky enough to have Nate come for a visit at your work like the employees of AMN Healthcare!

For questions regarding the program or to get your company signed up for 2009's season early please contact Doug Wescott at 858-467-4750 *15.

Vehicle Donations

Turn Tired Wheels into Donation $$

What do a 1985 Pace Arrow 28' motorhome, a 2000 Cadillac DeVille, a Four Winns 23' Vista boat, a 1992 BMW 735, and a 1993 Jayco 12' Pop-Up Tent Trailer have in common?  I can hear those heads being scratched!  All of these vehicles were among others recently donated to the Ronald McDonald House, resulting in thousands of dollars in additional support for the House.

Do you have a vehicle that is no longer needed, that you would like to see gone?  Our agent, Action Donation Services, makes all the arrangements, even towing the car if it is no longer running, all at no cost to the donor.  Still not sure if this is a good idea for your vehicle?  Action Donation Services evaluates each vehicle to maximize the selling price and therefore the donor's tax deduction and gift to the Ronald McDonald House.

For instance, an eight year old car that isn't running is towed to their garage and evaluated.  It is found the fuel pump isn't working, and so is replaced, and the car is now in running condition.  Action also details each vehicle.  The result is a sales price three times that if it were not repaired!  Even after expenses are deducted, the donor still has a higher tax deduction than if it had been sold while not running.

One doesn't have to be in San Diego, or even California, to make a vehicle donation.  Action Donation Services operates nationwide:  we recently received donations from Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.

It's almost too good to be true!  You get rid of that unneeded vehicle, Action Donation Services makes reasonable repairs to maximize the sales prices, the donor gets a maximum tax deduction, and Ronald McDonald House gains important support for its programs.  It's that simple.  Call Action Donation Services at 619-296-4483 today, or click here, and designate your vehicle to the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego.

Our Families: The Dover's

Two Tough Cookies!

Our Families: The Dover's

Meet Dulie and Julian Dover. They are natives of Imperial County, and Dulie worked as a special education aid at the elementary school her seven year old daughter attends. Dulie is a single mom and had to recently drop out of college and quit her job.  She was going to school for her nursing degree so that she could have a career that would pay for further education. Her ultimate goal was to obtain a PhD in Pharmacology.

However, all that changed last November. Dulie took Julian to the doctor for what she thought would be a routine visit for the flu. He had been sleeping a lot, very pale (jaundiced looking), and had fevers off and on for a week. She thought he had just been tired due to early rising for school.

They went to a clinic in Brawley and had lab work done. As soon as the results came in, the doctor said to go to the emergency room. Before she knew what was happening, he was getting a blood transfusion. She remembers the nurse telling her Julian was a very sick child. The worst case scenario would be Leukemia. That is the moment her world was turned upside down.

They life flighted Julian to Rady Children's Hospital. Dulie recalls Julian's excitement about riding in the helicopter...and he didn't even seem to be sick.  However, he had an extremely low hemoglobin level. When he arrived the nurses were surprised at how "well" he was considering where his level was. He had no blood cells and no blood flowing. He had several blood transfusions and plate transfusions.

When Dulie arrived at the hospital Julian was already in his room. She remembers how heart wrenching it was to see him all hooked up to I.V's, but he seemed to be in good spirits.

Julian was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). ALL is a cancer of the white blood cells, the cells in the body that normally fight infections. Leukemia cells are abnormal cells that cannot do what normal blood cells do. The abnormal cells are immature white blood cells that cannot help the body fight infections.

Julian is a very smart, happy boy.  He has remained in high spirits the past several months while in the hospital and receiving outpatient treatments. Julian loves the different "themed" rooms at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH). He also loves the playroom and computer lab where he plays Webkins, and Nick Jr. at night.

Dulie is grateful to be staying at the Ronald McDonald House. The House has allowed her to be steps away from her son. Her daughter and mother have also been able to stay with her at the Ronald McDonald House on weekends and during the winter break. "One of the best things about the House is how the staff treats our family like family."

Dulie also appreciates the volunteers and groups that provide dinner every night for the families. She said "prior to this experience I had a pessimistic outlook on the world. This experience has changed me. I have a new view on people and their generosity to give."

Julian has an encouraging prognosis and will be receiving treatment for the next three and a half years. Currently, he is staying at the Ronald McDonald House while he receives chemotherapy four times a week.  Dulie is saving for a laptop and is hoping to pursue a degree online while Julian is receiving treatments. However, her primary focus right now is her family.

Warming the Ronald McDonald House

Housewarming parties showcase community spirit

Warming the Ronald McDonald House

As many San Diegans know, the San Diego Ronald McDonald House is growing, and so is our Wish List. To meet the needs of moving from a 12-bedroom House to a 47-bedroom House, we registered at Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target and Wal-Mart and invited individuals, companies and service organizations to host Housewarming Parties or Drives with two purposes. First, to invite our supporters to shop for us and know exactly what is needed for our families by registering the items. Secondly, to create a setting for our party hosts to share our story with lots of friends, family and coworkers, using a Party Kit provided to each host.

The response from the San Diego community has been beyond our expectations, with nearly $30,000 in donations since the first party was held in late September 2008 by Susan Trance, a Murrieta resident, who gathered friends of a local family who had stayed at that Ronald McDonald House, in memoriam for their young child. Each party has been unique in gathering a large volume of friends and delivering our message, from a class of 2nd graders fulfilling a community service goal with the help of their school community, to an Eagle Scout's project that invited over 400 guests to attend a private concert he organized, which requested a Housewarming item or gift card to get into the event. The list of hosts and cash donors continues to grow daily, with extra help from local publications such as San Diego Family Magazine and the National Charity League newsletter, which have spread the word for us.

We would like to recognize our program "pioneers" who have participated as hosts or cash donors so far: Susan Trance, Adri Furtado, Cory Nuffer, Ellen Ernst, Johnny Dolstra, organizer for 24 Hour Fitness in Carlsbad, Catherine Palomares, organizer for Qualcomm, Alice Evans and 2nd Grade Class at Doyle Elementary, Dallen Abernathy (Eagle Scout), CarMax, Lisa Orlansky, Barbara LaPointe & Eve Shuh, Keith Kilbey & friends at Southwest Airlines, Jennifer Lawson & Bertha Huertero, organizers for San Diego County Library, Maria Luna, Molina Healthcare of California, Bill Allen & Mindy Antolak, Dr. Stephen Ronco & Carmel Valley Girl Scout Service Unit, Jaime Hallet & Heather Vessey, VoegeEtte Koltz & Bridge friends, Carol Dean & Mira Mesa Women's Club, Randy Bellamy, organizer for Kiwanis Division 11, Marci Laws, National Management Association, Lisa Farris & Garth Smith, organizers for Calloway Golf Company, Michelle Tellez & 8th Grade Class at Santa Sophia Academy, Sharon Bay & San Diego Family Magazine, Amanda King of Sorrento Valley Associates, My Ta & Shannon Doane, organizers for North Island Credit Union, Carla Anderson & Epsilon Sigma Alpha International,  Trinity United Methodist Church & United Methodist Women, Independent Order of Foresters in El Cajon, Gerard Daniele,  & Sheri & Eliot Alazraki.
