Meet Omariz Diaz-Chan and her parents, Jose Diaz and
Maritza Rivers. They are natives of Puerto Rico, and are currently
staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
Omariz left Puerto Rico a year and a half ago after
receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology. To further her
education, Omariz moved to Ensenada to study medicine. It was there
that she met Mario, the man of her dreams. While expecting their
first child, they moved to El Centro to be near Mario's family.
Six months into her pregnancy, she was flown by emergency
helicopter to Sharp Mary Birch Hospital (SMB) from the El Centro
Regional Medical Center. Her parents concerned, about their
daughter and grandchild, immediately flew to San Diego from Puerto
Rico.
While Omariz was on bed rest at SMB, her father, Jose, took advantage
of the day services offered at the House. He would come over and
shower, use the kitchen, and enjoy a home cooked dinner. It was
during this time that Jose became aware of the extent of day services
offered to so many families. He immediately inquired about
volunteering, offering to work for 3 hours each day at the House,
helping out in any way he could. With tears in his eyes, Jose said
that, "If I had to work a lifetime, I couldn't work
enough to show how grateful I am to be here."
Jose has developed a great appreciation for the all of the
staff, volunteers and donors at the Ronald McDonald House. He
recognizes the tremendous value of both community and individual
support to all the families staying at or visiting the the House.
He is equally impressed by how many individuals and groups come
to the House to serve dinner, turn in pop tabs, and make various
other donations, all to benefit the families.
Two weeks into her stay at SMB, and twenty-eight weeks into her
pregnancy, Omariz delivered a 3-pound baby boy. Her son, Mario Jr.,
will remain in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at SMB for the next
few months. Fortunately, Mario Jr. is doing extremely well, and
Omariz and Mario are looking forward to taking their son home to
El Centro in time for Father's Day. Proud grandparents, Jose and
Maritza, will remain in California for the next few months before
returning to their other children and grandchildren in Puerto Rico.

We are pleased to have Eloise on
our team. Eloise started volunteering at the Ronald McDonald
House in early August 2008 and has since started helping at the
Charity office as well. Tours, directions, general information, Eloise
is our gal!! A warm hug, a pleasant voice on the phone,
a comforting smile, making a difference is what she is all about.
It is her personal hospital experience that enables her to relate
to and assist families utilizing services at the Ronald McDonald
House. We appreciate her hard work and dedication to the many
families we serve.
When asked why she volunteers, she responded:
"I will
always bless the day that I was allowed to become a part of the
Ronald McDonald House family. Through this opportunity I have met
some of the finest human beings on this planet! Every day, I
meet people who are reaching out to support total
strangers-families of critically ill children. I also watch as
parents and Girl Scout troop leaders teach young people to reach out
to others in need without asking or expecting anything in return. I
watch as professional hairdressers lift the spirits of young
mothers with a new haircut-giving unselfishly of their time and
talent. And when they are gone, I see the gratitude of the families
who were touched at a very critical moment in their lives.
As a young
mother, I spent 6 months in intensive care with my son and I
believe that experience allows me to empathize with many of the
families who come through the doors of "The House that Love
Built". But I am also thankful to the staff and other
volunteers in the house who are training me to better meet the
needs of the families who come to us looking for comfort and care
as they support their child through the healing process. It
has been an honor for me to share with the families any small
degree of encouragement or help that I am able to provide, whether
it be a hug, a shoulder to cry on, or a packet of laundry
detergent."

Our Partners: Rock Cancer C.A.R.E. and ENF

Seasons in life only last a short time.
They come and they go without much warning. For the Hernandez Family
the seasons of life have been changing all too quickly. For the past
year eight- year- old Angel Hernandez has been battling
Retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer. The family received help from
the Ronald McDonald House and they have since been able to return
home.
The family's struggles did not end after Angel was discharged from
the hospital. Due to the time that was spent having Angel receive
chemo treatments, other things at home had to go un-attended. For the
family to remain in their home the exterior of the home needed
immediate and substantial work.
Overwhelmed with the endeavor that needed to be completed and not
having the finances to get everything fixed, Ronald McDonald House
put the family in touch with Rock Cancer C.A.R.E., a ministry of San
Diego's Rock Church in Point Loma, that fills in the ‘gaps' for
children and families not only battling cancer but any other serious
childhood diseases.
Rock Cancer C.A.R.E. immediately jumped on the
case to give the Hernandez's yard a facelift. Twenty volunteers came
together on a recent Saturday to get trash and weeds out of their
yard so the kids could safely play. The trash was then taken to the
dump and the Hernandez family now has a safe, clean, environment to
enjoy and spend time together. They are so thankful for the willing
hearts of all who have made such an effort to help them in their time
of need.

The Ronald McDonald
House, in collaboration with the Emilio Nares Foundation, hosted
their fourth annual Spring Celebration on March 28 in Presidio Park,
in Mission Hills. All the families residing at the House were
cordially invited and the event was a wonderful success!
As is customary, food was plentiful and entertainment was
provided with special characters, crafts, the traditional egg hunt
and more.
All ENF staff and volunteers were eager to provide our families a
much needed day of fun and games. "We are thankful to
the Ronald McDonald House for letting us be a part of their
celebration, to share a bit of happiness, and for providing these
families such a memorable event." And we can't be
more thankful for the help and support that Emilio Nares Foundation
is able to provide!
